Geography

Geography is a beautiful course of study. It brings together elements of chemistry, history, politics and even art. Respecting these synoptic links enables one to achieve a deeper understanding of the subject; this is often referred to as ‘thinking like a geographer’.

During geography sessions, the student picks a topic or concept they are struggling with which we go over. Practice questions form a key part of lessons as they build exam technique and teach students how to apply their knowledge effectively. I may also set students extra work to complete during the week to help consolidate their knowledge. I offer geography tutoring up to GCSE level. I do not offer geography A level tuition, although I am happy to help students in completing their A level Non Examination Assessments (NEAs).

GCSE

The three main exam boards providing GCSE geography are AQA, OCR and Edexcel. Each exam board is slightly different in terms of content. Exams are graded 1-9, 9 being the highest equivalent to an A**.

AQA – The course is split into 4 components; physical geography, human geography, geographical applications and geographical skills. Physical geography is composed of 3 modules; the challenge of natural hazards, the living world and physical landscapes in the UK. Human geography is also composed of 3 modules; urban issues and challenges, the changing economic world and the challenge of resource management. Content is assessed in 3 separate papers; paper 1 and 2 weighing 35% of the GCSE and being 1 hour and 30 minutes long, and paper 3 weighing 30% and being 1 hour and 15 minutes long. The specification is linked here.

Edexcel – The course is split into 3 components; physical geography, human geography and geographical investigations. Physical geography is composed of 3 sections; the changing landscapes of the UK, weather hazards and climate change, and ecosystems, biodiversity and management. Human geography is also composed of 3 sections; changing cities, global development and resource management. Content is assessed in 3 separate examinations, each 1 hour 30 minutes each. Papers 1 and 2 weigh 37.5% of the GCSE and paper 3 weighs 25%. The specification is linked here.

OCR – A and B specifications. In the A specification, the course is split into 3 components; ‘living in the UK today’, ‘the world around us’ and geographical investigations. In ‘living in the UK today’, there are 3 sections; landscapes of the UK, people of the UK and UK environmental challenges. ‘The world around us’ also has 3 sections; ecosystems of the planet, people of the planet and environmental threats to our planet. Content is assessed in 3 seperate examinations. Papers 1 and 2 are both 1 hour long and weigh 30% of the GCSE, paper 3 weighs 40% and is 1 and a half hours long. The specification for OCR A is linked here.
